Our story

Real wood, built to last a generation

Heava started with a simple frustration: you can spend a fortune on a good mattress, then sit it on a frame that wobbles, creaks and ends up in landfill within a few years. We thought the thing holding up your sleep should outlast everything else in the room.

The problem with most bed frames

Walk into most furniture shops and the "wooden" bed frame in front of you is usually MDF, particleboard and a few stapled steel brackets, wrapped in a thin veneer. It looks fine in the showroom. A year in, the joints loosen, the slats sag, and the whole thing develops that late-night creak. A few years after that, it's too damaged to move and too composite to recycle.

A mattress is only ever as good as what it sits on. So we set out to build the opposite of flat-pack: a frame made of real, solid hardwood that holds your mattress flat and steady, and that you'd genuinely consider passing on.

Why solid Hevea Maple

Every Heava frame is built from solid Hevea Maple — a dense, close-grained hardwood upcycled from Hevea (rubberwood) trees that have finished their working life producing natural latex. Once those trees stop yielding latex they're normally felled and burned. Instead, that timber becomes furniture built to be kept.

It means no new forest is cleared to make your bed, the carbon stays locked in the wood rather than going up in smoke, and you get a frame with the weight and solidity that only real hardwood has. It's also why we're careful with our words: every Heava piece is designed in Ireland from sustainably sourced solid wood — no MDF, no veneer, no shortcuts.

The people behind Heava

Heava and our sister brand, The Spinery, share a Monkstown showroom and two founders whose day jobs are, honestly, why our furniture is the way it is — one who has spent a career on how the body is supported, and one on what materials are safe to live with.

Dr Lawrence Woods

Chiropractor & bio-mechanical engineer

Around thirty years treating thousands of people, founder of Decompression Ireland and co-founder of Dublin Chiropractic. His career is about how the body is supported when it sits, stands and sleeps — which is exactly the question a bed frame should answer. It's why a Heava frame holds a mattress flat and rock-solid, with no sag and no give.

Dr Sinéad Moore

Molecular biologist

A BSc in Biotechnology and a PhD in Molecular Biology from Dublin City University, and twenty-five years in science. Her research is on healthy, sustainable materials — and on the toxic chemicals hiding in everyday products. It's the reason Heava is solid upcycled hardwood rather than the glue-and-formaldehyde board most frames are built from.

Designed in Ireland, delivered to your door

We design every piece in Ireland and deliver and assemble it anywhere in the country — so the first time you see your frame, it's standing in your bedroom, built, not flat in a box on the landing. And because we share a showroom with The Spinery, you can test a Heava frame and the mattress that goes on it in a single visit.
